Montmartre

Montmartre is a very interesting section of town. I quite liked it, though walking around it was a lot of climbing and descending hills. Montmartre is french for mount of martyrs (can you see it?) and supposedly Saint Denis lost his head there and then walked partway down the hill.

Here are a few pics of cool things in the area.

Sacre Coeur, this church (of the sacred heart) is on the highest hill in Paris. It overlooks the rest of the city.

Reminiscent of a movie Parker and I used to watch. All the time.

I didn't get the pants

Mostly because I couldn't find any I liked. Maybe later if the problem gets worse. However, I did spend money.

I got these!!


I think they are so pretty!! And they are based on 18th Century jewelry, which makes them even cooler. And I got them in Paris!

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier



This is a really cool monument. It was commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate military victories of France. It has the names of French commanders inscribed on the walls, and a frieze of soldiers around the top and a row of 30 shields each with a battle's name inscribed on them. And then it has the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame. It never goes out, to always remember those who died for the nation,

Around the Madeline

Here is the day we walked around the Madeline. It is a huge church in the Roman Byzantine style. And I do mean huge. It looks like the Parthenon in Greece.

Saint Louis, he was the 9th king Louis and went on two crusades. He actually was probably the definition of a Christian in his time, which is probably why he was Sainted.

And its back to the swamps!! This was actually one of my favorite sections of town. There were so many cool things!! Here are a couple of highlights.

Jewish Synagogue



Hector Guimard, art nouveau designer. I love his work! He designed the Jewish Synagogue (his wife was Jewish)

Replica of an 18th Century room in the Cognac-Jay museum


The Cognac-Jay museum is totally dedicated to items from the 18th Century. It was really cool. There were several rooms set up to look like they would have at that time period and porcelain miniatures and paintings. It was really cool, and really cheap.
