I subbed at a high school today. The never ending problem with high school is that everyone has a cell phone. I told the class that if I saw it, I would take it away. So of course someone has to challenge me. This one kid had his cell phone out. There were approximately two minutes left in class. I asked for it, he refused. (a reasonable request cannot be refused without repercussions on the student's part) I asked him several times and then asked for his name. He wouldn't give me that either. Sadly for him, he was in the corner computer, so he couldn't escape without getting past me. Sadly for me, he was twice my size and probably had almost a foot on me. Then he started threatening and swearing at me. I still wouldn't let him go. Then the bell rang. He left and the other students told me his name.
My question is this? What is he thinking? I guess he really does not realize that it doesn't end with me, I wrote a full report for his teacher and he will have to deal with the consequences. He really thinks it is that unfair that he cannot use his cell phone in class and of course he does not have to follow the rules because he is different. Honestly, I do not get that mentality. What happened to respect in schools? Because I'm telling you, its not there.

It's classic adolescent behaviour which adults don't understand, or anyone else. They think they are all that and a can of pringles. Especially this guy since he's bigger than you, he probably thinks he's an adult. I never acted with such disrepect when I was a teen at school so I don't know what's with these other kids that have to be that way. Anyway, you've also given me some motivation to NOT sign up to be a sub! I could handle the kids at Sylvan that needed help but not in public school classes. I'm too little as well ;)
I subbed for the same teacher again today. Apparently that kid is one who has special needs, not that that excuses the behavior. If you do want to be a sub, just take the elementary school jobs. Those kids are very cute and mostly shorter that you!
Totally been there! More times than I'd like to admit. Sadly, kids think they have more rights than they do.
Special needs kids do have a tendancy to act that way. There was one like that at Sylvan. He was a senior reading at a 1st grade level. Anyway, for some reason he really liked me and always wanted to sit at my table, even though I never taught him and never could since I was only allowed to teach math.
